Afro-Cuban Rhythm Sessions
Monthly Afro-Cuban Drumming Sessions
For all of you who attended the recent Elephant Drums workshops on Afro-Cuban drumming, or the World Rhythms Workshop exploring Batá rhythms, this is a great opportunity to put everything you learnt into practice. Join a friendly group of fellow musicians to play, explore and develop batá, rumba and other Afro-Cuban styles.
Date & Time:
Every first Monday of the month
9:30pm to 11:30pm
Musicians – FREE
PLEASE NOTE this is not an audience/performance type event. All those who attend are encouraged to take part in some small or large way depending on their experience of the traditions – this could include anything from hand clapping, singing, drumming or leading the songs.
There is also a rumba dance class beforehand at 8:30pm which costs £7 to take part, although for musicians playing for the dancers it is free to attend and accompany the dancing.
Vogue Fabrics, 66 Stoke Newington Road, N16 8BX
The venue is just up the road from the Hackney studio location.
Who can take part?
Percussionist and singers familiar with these musical traditions are invited to come and play. The evening begins with playing for the orichas with batá music followed by a rumba. We have been honoured to be joined by some of the legends from the batá and rumba Cuban traditions including Gerardo De Armas, Martica Gallaraga, Yosvani Diaz and former Conjuncto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba member Antonio Urdaneta Castro. We are very grateful to the many UK based percussionists who also support this night and make it possible.
