Everything you need to know about getting a great drum sound for your recordings
Hosted by Elephant Drums, this practical masterclass is for drummers who want to capture a confident, musical drum sound at home or in the studio. We will demystify the choices behind a good recording, from a simple first setup to a more detailed multi-mic approach.
Date & time: Thursday 17 September 2026 · 2:30pm
What we’ll cover
- Dynamic microphones for kick, snare and toms: high-SPL handling, useful isolation and close-mic placement.
- Condenser microphones for overheads, hi-hat detail and a clear picture of the whole kit, including practical stereo choices such as spaced pair and X/Y.
- Kick and room options: purpose-built kick mics, low-profile boundary mics and when a room or ribbon microphone can add character.
- Placement, polar patterns and phase: how small moves change attack, weight, cymbal balance and the sense of space—and how to listen for a fuller, more coherent result.
- Simple setups that work: how to begin with one, two or four microphones before adding more channels.
You will leave with a clearer way to choose the microphones you have, position them with purpose and troubleshoot the common problems that make recordings sound thin, harsh or unfocused. Bring your recording questions and your own setup challenges.
